The Rhode Island Blood Center has issued an urgent The Rhode Island Blood Center has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations following a more than 20% drop in contributions after Thanksgiving. The decrease has left the state’s blood supply critically low during a time of year when demand often rises. RIBC is calling for donors of all blood types, with a special emphasis on Type O, which is crucial for trauma and emergency medical care. “Every year, we brace for a dip in donations around the holidays, but the need for blood doesn’t slow down,” said Caitlin Grimaldi-Flick, Marketing and Communications Manager at RIBC. “Our community relies on a steady flow of donors to keep our hospitals supplied, and we’re calling on everyone who is eligible to make blood donation part of their holiday tradition. It’s among the most meaningful gifts you can give.” The holiday season presents unique challenges for blood collection, as family gatherings, travel, and packed schedules lead to fewer donor appointments. Simultaneously, the demand for blood tends to increase due to travel-related accidents, routine surgeries, and other emergencies. Local hospital officials are echoing RIBC’s call to action. “Amid the joy and celebration of the holiday season, the simple act of donating blood can be the greatest gift you give,” said Dr. Charles Adams, Chief of Trauma at Rhode Island Hospital. “As we give thanks for what we have, we must remember that our generosity can help others celebrate another holiday next year.” Blood donors can give every 56 days, while platelet donors are eligible to donate twice per month. RIBC encourages both new and returning donors to schedule an appointment soon. Recent changes to federal guidelines by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have expanded eligibility for many donors. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Manag The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management has announced the conservation of 942.11 acres of forest in Burrillville for public recreation, including hunting and fishing. The Buck Hill property acquisition marks DEM’s largest since 2014 and preserves one of the last undeveloped parcels in the state. The $1.61 million project was supported by a $1.2 million U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service grant and $301,250 from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, with a match from state bond funds. The land connects over 13,000 acres of protected areas across Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, significantly expanding forested uplands and cedar swamp conservation. DEM Director Terry Gray called the effort a “huge win” for the state’s natural resources, highlighting the role of hunters and target shooters whose purchases help fund conservation. Rhode Island Boy Scouts, which sold the land while retaining 200 acres for scout use, praised the partnership. The property will be incorporated into the Buck Hill Management Area, with 140 acres temporarily closed for improvements. Vessels of all shapes and sizes lined up south of the Goat Island Causeway before making two loops around Newport Harbor. It was cold but the sea was calm and the wind was low… a perfect evening for a winter parade! Aboard the Amazing Grace, Matt Gineo got the crowds pumped as he passed by. “Merry Christmas Newport Yacht Club! Happy Hannukah Newport Harbor Hotel!” Approaching the Lobster Bar Matt asked “have you been naughty or nice Lobster Bar?” a resounding cheer went out to indicate the crowd skewed toward the naughty side! Since his passing in 2020, former harbormaster Tim Mills is remembered when the Tim Mills Team Spirit award is presented. It is given to the boat that best embodies the spirit of community and camaraderie. This year it went to Northeast powerboat. The downpour held off for the YMCA’s 39th Annual The downpour held off for the YMCA’s 39th Annual Pie Run Thanksgiving morning. Runners and walkers lined up at 8:30 a.m. on Valley Road to complete a 3 mile or 5 miles loop which brought them around Tuckerman Avenue. The runners chugged by Second Beach while the walkers made a left turn to Purgatory Road. The USATF sanctioned race was founded in 1985 by the Newport Running Club. According to Amy Cicilline Lynch, 2040 people registered this year some from as far away as California. Of course there were a lot of local stars on hand too. Chief Harp Donnelly and his lovely wife Tricia buzzed by us on Aquidneck Ave. Noah Jewell, Linda Sullivan, Alexander Nesbitt, and T.J. Brown were all keeping a good pace running. Super fan Henry Bowlin was cheering all the runners some wearing turkey hats others donning tutus but he was especially happy to applaud his dad as he raced by. Food donations were collected for the MLK Community Center. The race, presented by Saccucci Honda, raises funds for the Y’s Community Support Campaign and has virtual options so that everyone can participate no matter where they are. Coming in first for men was Philip Royer of Newport followed by Keith McAleer of Westerly and Patrick Murphy of Middletown. A record-breaking performance from Malik Grant and a suffocating defensive effort sent the Rams (11-2) to the second round, earning a date with No. 7 Mercer. The Rams (11-2) wasted no time seizing control. Quarterback Hunter Helms set the tone with a pinpoint 38-yard touchdown strike to Tommy Smith, and moments later, defensive back Emmanuel Gomes delivered a game-altering 42-yard pick-six. Rhode Island surged to a 14-0 lead, and the Meade Stadium faithful erupted. But the NEC champions weren’t going quietly. Central Connecticut State stormed back behind quarterback Brady Olson, whose two touchdown passes to Isaac Boston brought the game level at 14 heading into the final quarter. With the season on the line, Rhode Island found its edge. Shawn Harris Jr. jumpstarted the fourth quarter with a 23-yard punt return, setting up prime field position. Six plays later, Smith, taking a direct snap in the Wildcat formation, powered through the defense for a 6-yard touchdown that would prove decisive. The Rams’ defense, relentless all afternoon, made sure the lead held. They limited CCSU to just 271 total yards, forced three interceptions, and closed the door when lineman Westley Neal Jr. picked off a tipped pass late in the game. At the center of it all was running back Malik Grant, who turned in a performance for the ages. Grant carried the ball 30 times for 223 yards, breaking the school’s single-season rushing record with 1,390 yards and recording his second straight 200-yard game. The victory not only extended Rhode Island’s historic season but also marked the Rams’ 11th win, a program record. Next up: a second-round showdown with No. 7 Mercer on December 7.
